Lisa Rupp, Pattern Designer

A big thanks to Twig & Thistle for introducing me to Lisa Rupp.

Lisa Rupp is a graphic designer, illustrator and crafter based in Arizona. She creates bold prints full of rich color. I really respond to the print below with its bold combination of plum and mustard. Wouldn't it make the most fabulous wallpaper?

Lisa has a blog on which she offers, in addition to photos and art that inspires her, a free printable calendar for the month of March. She will continue to offer a new 8"x10" print for each month on her blog and on flickr. I will definitely be printing out a copy of March to hang at my desk and infuse my workspace with a touch of Spring.

Prints are available at Lisa's redbubble shop here.

Ebay Finds

I'm forever finding fabulous furniture on ebay but certainly don't have the room in my home (or the budget) to acquire it all.  Since I don't see myself winning the lottery any time soon I'm happy to share these finds with you in case one happens to be the perfect piece you've been searching for. Don't you like how my big splurge post lottery winning would be all of the furniture in my ebay watch list?

If i had a studio with a large raised workspace right in the center of the room, I would want to be hard at work sitting in this green chair

And if I actually had an entry space I would have this white bench waiting there for you to rest your feet or place your bag and coat on.

I can't seem to make up my mind about the style table/stool I would like as a side table next to my sofa.  This small round walnut table is quite nice and a great price:

However this round table is much more interesting so naturally it already has 9 people bidding on it with 4 more days to go until the auction is over:

I might actually consider bidding on these Arne Jacobsen Fritz Hansen dining chairs but they are so amazing I had to share them with you.  The upholstery would need to be replaced and I have no idea what that would cost but I love them and therefore can't be bothered worrying about such things.

And lastly, not furniture but this little guy would be a wonderful addition to any home.  I'm in an elephanty mood today and would be happy to bring this into mine.

Happy bidding and have a great weekend!

Eleven Minutes - Jay McCarroll

Are any of you out there Project Runway fans?  I used to be the biggest fan of the show that ever lived (though I'll admit my interest is waning) and my hands down favorite winner was Jay McCarroll from season 1.  I would wear everything he sent down the runway for the finale show and everything that came out of his mouth had me in stitches. My boyfriend didn't mind watching the show with me since he was equally entertained by Jay.  Thanks to Green {Goody} I just found out that Jay made a movie called "Eleven Minutes" chronicling his year long journey preparing is first runway show post Project Runway.  I can't wait to see this and turns out I don't have to wait too long because it premieres tomorrow.  The movie will premiere in selected cities and available online at here! tv.  Here's the movie trailer if you'd like to check it out:

Ink & Spindle - Hand Painted Textiles

Ink & Spindle is a boutique screen-printing studio in Melbourne, Australia run by three textile designers – Lara Cameron, Bianca van Meeuwen and Tegan Rose.  They specialise in high quality textile printing for designers and independent labels.  They also have a online shop featuring a range of products from their in-house labels Hollabee, Lara Cameron and Tegan Rose. Most of their fabrics are natural, non-synthetic fibers printed using water-based, solvent-free inks.  Ink and spindle has a strong commitment to minimizing their impact on the Earth, which you can read about here.

And now for the fun stuff.  Take a look at these gorgeous fabrics currently being added to the shop:

Wrens available in Nathan's Blue and  Charcoal

Sumor available in a whole slew of colours

And probably my favorite, Birch which is available in  Chocolate and Robin's Egg

A million and one projects come to mind when I browse the shop. I know it will be a bit costly to have the fabrics shipped from Australia but the fabrics are so wonderful it's definitely worth it. Also, the exchange rate between AUD and USD is not too bad right now that I might have to take advantage of that.

I spent some time going through Ink & Spindle's flickr photostream and found photos of their fantastic studio.  It seems impossible to create anything but the loveliness that they do when your work space looks like this:

West Elm Tillary Sectional

Alrightie kiddos, I'm in need of a little advice. Actually what I'm really looking for is your opinions of this sectional from West Elm:

I've been on the hunt for a new sofa for some time now and the options I've been leaning towards look nothing like this. It has low blocky legs which I didn't want and the color is just screaming for dirty puppy paw prints. But something about this photos makes me think I must have this sectional. I must be distracted by that fabulous suzani print pillow and the layered rugs. Don't you think that zig zag rug is a decent stand in for a Madeline Weinrib? So what do you think? Good, bad, wierd?

Sweets For Your Sweet

I've picked out my card, snagged a great gift (honey in case you read my blog before the weekend, don't click that link) and plan on doing a little bit of baking. All in all, a low key Valentine's Day and though my gifts are inexpensive they are all thoughtful and perhaps most importantly handmade. In case you were thinking about baking something for your Valentine but aren't quite sure how to present it as a gift I wanted to share these DIY gift ideas from Twig & Thistle.

You can find a printable pdf for that adorabale box and baking instructions for the apple pies here.

Instructions for the heart shaped brownies (hint bake brownies, use heart shaped cookie cutter) and directions for printing the bags (my favorite part) can be found here.

So clever, right? Someone should tell Twig & Thistle that these ideas are too good to be giving away for free. I mean, oops, wait I didn't say that. Keep them coming.

The Scrappy Girl and The Deal Hunter Have New Homes

Along with losing our beloved Domino Magazine some of you may have  also been mourning the loss of some of the great blogs that Domino offered on their website.  I certainly enjoyed following Catherine Halley's (the Scrappy Girl) quest to furnish her New York apartment with fabulous vintage finds.  The Scrappy Girl has made a big move to Chicago and now you can follow along with her on all of the adventures associated with pulling together a home in a new city on her blog Maison d'Etre

Once I discovered Catherine's new blog I went on a hunt to see if the Deal Hunter, Nick Olsen had set up shop somewhere else.  I wasn't all that successful and quite frankly a little bummed since Nick never failed to crack me up whether he was designing a room around Michelle Obama's inaugural ensemble or offering up some not quite traditional holiday decorating ideas.  It looks like I'm in luck because thanks to the sleuth work of Holly over at Decor8 I now know he just started a new blog that can be found here: Nick Olsen Style.  He first post has is charming goodbye to Domino and it's sweet and sad.

It's nice to know that I won't have to say goodbye to everything I liked about Domino and it will be interesting to see what these two smart and creative folks have to offer.

Something Warm and Comforting for Dinner

I've been persuaded by several friends to share some of my recipes on this blog.  It's nice to know they actually do like my food and aren't just humoring me when I invite them over for dinner.  The first recipe I'd like to share with you is extremely easy and always turns out tasting delicious (even if I'm missing ingredients).  It's adapted from one in an old issue of Gourmet Magazine.  In my house we call this Turkey Meatball Soup but I'm sure Gourmet called it something a little nicer like Escarole Soup with Orzo and Turkey Meatballs.  Whatever you call it, this is perfect comfort food for this horribly cold winter we've been having.   So here goes the ingredients list.  I'm not always great at measuring but perfection need not apply with this soup.

Turkey Meatball Soup

For the meatballs:
1lb. ground turkey
2 garlic gloves finely minced (or mashed if you have a pressed)
4 tbsp. of chopped parsley (more/less, we like a lot of parsley in our meatballs)
1 egg
2 tbsp. water
1/4 c. grated parmesan
1/4 c. bread crumbs

For the soup:
64 oz. of chicken broth (or 58 oz. if I have 4 cans instead of 2 large cartons)
32 oz. of water (for a richer soup use less water/more broth)
1 onion chopped fine
1 c. chopped carrots
1/2 - 1 whole head of escarole cut into 1/2 inch strips
1/2 c. orzo
1 tsp. dried herbs such as rosemary or thyme (optional, sometimes I forget this ingredient)

To prepare the meatballs:
Whisk the egg and water together and add bread crumbs and parmesan.  Once the bread crumbs have soaked up the liquid add rest of ingredients and get you hands messy mixing it all up.

To make small uniform meatballs I use a small cookie scoop.  Line all of the meatballs on a cookie sheet and store in the fridge while you prepare the soup.  This chilling time helps the meatballs set up.

For the soup:
In a large heavy stockpot, heat the olive oil.  Cook onion and rosemary until onions are softened. Add carrots, stir to coat with oil and cook about 1 minute.  Add broth, water and orzo to the pot; simmer for 10 minutes.  Add meatballs to the soup and cook for about 8 minutes.  And escarole and cook for about 5 minutes.  We don't mind if the escarole still has a little crunch along the mid-rib but if would like it softer just cook a few minutes longer.

Sprinkle with some grated parmesan if you please and serve with crusty bread.  I guarantee you will enjoy this dinner and it's easy enough to prepare during the week.  It makes a nice big pot so you will have plenty of leftovers for lunch or dinner another night.

Just More Love

I've got love on the brain today.  And not the sappy puppy love but more loving life, love for friends and family, loving the moment, loving what the future might hold and maybe a little of the sappy kind of love too.  I've been searching around flickr for pictures that say love to me.  Did you know when you search "Love" in flickr you get 6,663,307 results?  Sweet, isn't it?  Then this afternoon I received this message in my facebook inbox:

Tragic news. Gail Lindsey, who has been battling liver cancer for some time, died yesterday afternoon, Feb. 2. Gail's spirit was a bright light to anyone who knew her, heard her, or even occupied a room with her. She will be missed.

Here are some of Gail's characteristic remarks from "Women in Green":

"A mentor once told me that to change the world, I should change myself. But that’s hard! Sustainability is most profound when you find it personally. Once you respect and love yourself, you start respecting and loving and valuing everything else—other people, the planet—because you know that you are connected."

“All we have to do is love more. Love ourselves more. Love the ecosystems more. Just love more.”

I never knew Gail but my heart ached for those who will be missing her as she was obviously loved very deeply.  Most importantly I'll keep that message of love close to me.  I want to love more, love myself more, love my friends more, and let them know how much they are loved.  So to all of you, however you say it:
